First Baptist Church
141 St. James Avenue
Centered on the Savior….Together Standing in His Will!
Our church began as a mission in a one-room building known as "Turner's Barber Shop" in January of 1957, twelve people working together under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, with a vision which today is a reality. This mission was sponsored by Charleston Heights Baptist Church.
It was constituted into a church on October 18, 1959, with 86 charter members. Rev. Lloyd Doyle was the first pastor from January of 1957 to July of 1961. At that time it was named "Pineview Baptist Church" and was chartered on February 8, 1960.
Located on St. James Avenue, one of the busiest roads in the entire state of South Carolina, First Baptist has an unparalledled opportunity to minister to the community of Goose Creek. We are affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and supports its cooperative program throughout our state, nation, and arouind the world – emulating Christ's commission to the New Testament church that "You shall be witnesses for me in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth..."(Acts 1:8)
What does Christ mean when He makes reference to "Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria?"
Jesus is referring to places and people who are near to us. Our "Jerusalem" is the place where we live; "Judea" encompasses a somewhat more expansive area, most comparable to our state or region. The United States best represents Christ's notion of "Samaria." First Baptist Church of Goose Creek is committed to following Christ's example by meeting both the physical and spiritual needs of those close to home.
What about the "ends of the earth?"
Jesus commands us to go – wherever we are needed – even into the global world of missions. In answer to His call, First Baptist Church further supports missionaries representing the Southern Baptist Convention in foreign countries. We are excited to be a part of ministries which reach out to the furthest regions of our world where people also desperately need the Lord.
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And slkurely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Matthew 18: 19-20 NIV
Having been led as we believe by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God and this assembly most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another and as one body in Christ.
We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge, holiness, and comfort, to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, doctrines, and disciplines; to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, and the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospel through all nations.
We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to religiously educate our children to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings; faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment; to avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger; to abstain from the sale of and use of destructive drugs or intoxicating drinks as a beverage; to shun pornography; and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior.
We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; to remember one another in prayer; to aid one another in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and Christian courtesy in speech; to be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation and mindful of the rules of our Savior to secure it without delay.
We moreover engage that when we remove from this place we will as soon as possible unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word.
